Welcome to the Postgraduate research experience enhancement group.

Welcome to the postgraduate research experience enhancement discussion group.

The Higher Education Academy has run the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) since 2007; this year it is being replaced by the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) to allow institutions time to evaluate and act on previous PRES results. It will run again in 2011 when PTES will take an enhancement year.

This group is for anyone with an interest in enhancing provision for postgraduate researchers. Whilst it complements the survey, it is open to all staff and students whether or not their institution has participated in PRES, to allow as wide a group as possible to explore the evidence on the postgraduate research experience, share practice and discuss issues faced in enhancing PGR provision.

Read Lessons from PRES, an overview report on PRES 2007-9.

The Higher Education Academy's EvidenceNet service (of which this Ning is a part) can be used to access a range of evidence on HE learning and teaching from across the HE sector (see http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/evidencenet). Resources include research reports, case studies, educational journal articles; EvidenceNet also searches forthcoming events and networks.

The respository on the main website currently shows 130 resources, events and networks as a result of a search for 'postgraduate': (http://bit.ly/8cCdwi). You can also narrow this search by discipline, pedagogic theme, and/or resource type on the Browse Resources page (http://bit.ly/6Wj3XZ)

Guidelines for the use of PRES results
The Academy post-graduate surveys team responded to an institutional query regarding the appropriate use of PRES results, what should and what should not be published? A summary of the advice given is included here as it may be useful to all institutions.

Qualitative results
Qualitative comments can be published if they are fully anonymised and not offensive. If you split them by department, it is essential that anonymity is maintained. For instance, if a department is very small, it may be obvious who the comments refer to, and/or who has written them, so these comments should not be included.

Quantitative results
Most quantitative results can also be published. The only caveat is to do with sample size. The smaller the sample, the less useful/valid the results will be. As a rule of thumb, anything that is reported should be based on at least ten responses per cell. For example, if you are reporting the views of international students, there should be at least ten responses from international students in each cell that you are reporting about.

The only other important restriction is that institutions should not publish their own results until after the Academy has published the national figures. The national figures for PRES 2009 have already been published and our reports can be downloaded from www.heacademy.ac.uk/ourwork/supportingresearch/postgraduatework

The Academy is keen to encourage institutions to inform their students of their survey results. So long as the above guidelines are followed, we hope you will be able to give your students as full a picture as possible of how they responded to PRES. If you are willing to share any of your reporting with us, for potential inclusion on EvidenceNet www.heacademy.ac.uk/evidencenet and/or circulation to other PRES officers, we would be delighted.

A new report by the 1994 Group recommends introduction of quality threshold for PhD provision; read the report here:
